چکیده

In this thesis we address the problem of multi-robot localization with a heterogeneous team of low-cost mobile robots. The team consists of a single centralized “observer” with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and monocular camera, and multiple “picket” robots with only IMUs and Red Green Blue (RGB) light emitting diodes (LED). This team cooperatively navigates a visually featureless environment such as a collapsed building. A combination of camera imagery captured by the observer, as well as IMU measurements on the pickets and observer are fused to estimate motion of the team. A team movement strategy, referred to as inchworm, is formulated as follows; pickets move ahead of the observer and then act as temporary landmarks for the observer to follow. This cooperative approach employs a single Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to localize the entire heterogeneous multi-robot team, using a formulation of the measurement Jacobian to relate the pose of the observer to the poses of the pickets with respect to the global reference frame. An initial experiment with the inchworm strategy has shown localization within 0.14 m position error and 2.18 orientation error over a path-length of 5 meters in an environment with irregular ground, partial occlusions and a ramp. This demonstrates improvement over a camera only relative pose measurement localization technique that was adapted to our team dynamic which produced 0.18m position error and 3.12 orientation error over the same dataset.

Distributed Heterogeneous Outdoor Multi-Robot Localization

An Extended Kalman Filter-based algorithm for the localization of a team of robots is described in this paper. The distributed EKF localization scheme is straightforward in that the individual robots maintain a pose estimate using EKFs that are local to every robot. We then show how these results can be extended to perform heterogeneous cooperative localization in the absence or degradation of ...

Agents for cooperative heterogeneous mobile robotics: a case study

In the last years, there is a greater interest in systems of multiple autonomous robots for the accomplishment of cooperative tasks. This fact has motivated the implementation of a distributed architecture for a team of heterogeneous mobile robots. Such architecture must have the capacity to allow to the team of robots the accomplishment of cooperative tasks; the proposed solution consist of a ...

An Experimental Investigation of Cooperative Slam

This paper considers the problem of cooperative navigation and mapping by a heterogeneous team of multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). We address a form of cooperative Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) in which only one vehicle is responsible for maintaining estimates of the map and poses for each robot. By combining inter-vehicle measurements with observations of the envi...

Improving Self localization and Object Localization by a Team of Robots Using Sensor Fusion

In this paper we propose an approach to handle the cooperative localization of an object by a team of robots. Our technique uses propagation of beliefs to combine information provided by a team of robots so as to support a teammate in critical situations when it can not see an object, is lost or equipped with low quality sensors and need cleaner data. The performance of our approach has been te...
